Understanding and Working with
Young Men in Custody
The Trust for the Study of Adolescence (TSA) and HM Prison Service published Understanding and Working with Young Men in Custody at the end of February 2003. The programme was first published in 1994 as The Nature of Adolescence. The pack is now in its third version and has been thoroughly revised with two new modules and a new 50-minute video. HM Prison Service promotes the use of this pack and HM Chief Inspector of Prisons endorsed the original version of the programme.
The programme covers: an introduction to concepts and principles; young men in society; the family; peer groups; crime and offending behaviour; staff issues; young men and mental health; creating and maintaining a positive culture.
TSA has worked with the Prison Service to train trainers to deliver this programme in establishments.
This programme is ideal for staff working with young adult men in custody. Similar modules, designed specifically for staff working with juveniles are part of the Prison Services’ Juvenile Awareness Staff Programme (JASP).
