Parenting Programmes

We have included here a list of parenting programmes that are:
  • nationally available parenting programmes that are currently being used in the Young People’s Secure Estate (under 18 years) or
  • were mentioned as resource material by practitioners who told us about their work or
  • have recently been developed and may be relevant to support parents in this context

Additionally, the Commissioning Toolkit of Parenting Programmes at http://www.commissioningtoolkit.org is a comprehensive, searchable database of replicable parenting programmes.

Description: An accredited 10 module programme for African Caribbean fathers that can be used flexibly.

Programme: ESCAPE and Parallel Lines
Organisation: Trust for the Study of Adolescence
Description: Explores areas of young people’s behaviour (10 years plus) which parents find difficult to address, such as non-school attendance and offending. The programme can be used with individual families or as a group work intervention. Also a programme to work with young people in parallel.

Programme: Family Matters
Organisation: New Bridge Foundation
Description: An accredited parenting education programme specifically designed for the custodial context that can be offered to all parents, including young fathers and mothers.

Organisation: Incredible Years
Description: The Incredible Years series includes parent education programmes aimed at reducing children's aggression and behaviour problems and increasing social competence at home and at school. For parents of children aged 2-12 years.

Description: Gives practical help to parents with emphasis on enhancing self-esteem. Aims to support the development of relationships in families by increasing the insight and understanding of those involved.

Programme: Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities
Organisation: Race Equality Foundation
Description: A 13 week inclusive parent education programme which providers are trained to deliver during a five day course. The course is accredited by Open College Network. It is suitable for parents of different ages, including teenage parents.

Programme: Systematic Training for Effective Parenting

Description: There are three STEP parent education programmes each consisting of seven sessions and addressing the parenting of children from birth to 6 years, 6-12 years (also Spanish version) and the teenage years.

Programme: The Parenting Puzzle
Organisation: Family Links
Description: The Parenting Puzzle is based on the Nurturing Programme, a 10-week course that helps understand how emotions influence actions, and offers many positive, practical ways of guiding children so they learn to handle both their feelings and their behaviour.

Description: A parenting programme for parents of teenagers and pre-teens. Positive Parenting deliver services to parents in different settings and have also published a parenting programme for fathers, Time Out for Dads.
