Parenting - Inside and Out
Supporting Young Parents in Custody and their Families

The project is designed to develop practice in providing parenting support for young parents in custody (under 18 year old fathers and mothers) and their parents/carers ie intergenerational parenting support.

We aim to do this by:

  • 'Mapping' who is providing parenting support now and how they are doing it
  • Learning from parents/carers and practitioners about what works best
  • Developing new materials, approaches and guidance with pilot projects
  • Sharing our learning with other organisations
This is a three year project running to March 2009, funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) under the Children, Young People and their Families grant programme (England). The project is supported by the Prison Service Women and Young People’s Group and the Youth Justice Board who are represented in our Consultative Group, along with colleagues from the Teenage Pregnancy Unit in the DCSF, the Youth Justice and Children’s Unit in the Ministry of Justice and the Learning and Skills Council. Additionally, we have an Advisory Group involving colleagues from the Race Equality Foundation and Action for Prisoners Families and we are working to involve parents in this group.
