Living with Teenagers in Foster Care

A one-day training course
This training course explores issues and challenges both young people and foster families face when a teenager joins a family. It looks at how they can learn about each other and start to build positive relationships. Carers, young people and social workers have all contributed to the content of this course, which is based on research, carried out by Young People in Focus when it was called TSA, and the training manual.

Our research found that trust, for young people, is a crucial issue and that paying more attention to how young people join foster families and share / exchange information helps to build trust and promotes positive relationships. The course also looks at ways young people feel welcomed and included in the foster family. Young people had many suggestions about what they found helpful. This course is aimed at foster carers and social workers.

The course covers:

  • Getting off to a good start
  • Exchanging information and promoting communication
  • How previous relationships can have an impact
  • Understanding each others’ past
  • Developing and building trust
  • What helps
