NEW WORKSHOP
Supporting Young Fathers
- Spotlight on Promising Practice
18 May 2011 (London)
Although work with young fathers is extremely patchy across the country, a body of expertise has developed through the innovative work of a number of projects and services. This workshop gives participants the opportunity to work closely with one of the leading projects in the field, Working with Men.
The event will include input from the project about their work plus an overview of key issues relating to work with young fathers from Kevin Lowe (Young People in Focus, YPF) who will chair the workshop.
However, the majority of the day will be shaped by discussion and activities built around the issues identified by the participants (in advance and on the day). There will be plenty of time to share ideas, problem-solve and consider what works and what to avoid. It will be an exciting day and essential for anyone who wants to get into the detail of working with young fathers.
Participants will also receive a copy of Supporting Young Fathers: Examples of Promising Practice by Nigel Sherriff (usual price £18.00). This publication features lessons from the work of 33 projects and services. Visit YPF’s specialist microsite www.youngfathers.net for even more information about working with young fathers.
The course covers:
- The benefits of father involvement for children
- What young fathers say about services
- Key messages from reviews of promising practice with young fathers
- Finding and engaging with young fathers
- Meeting the needs of fathers from diverse backgrounds
- Different ways of working with young fathers (1:1, groupwork, couples)
- Involving young parents in developing services
